What is provitamin A?

Provitamin A refers to a group of plant-based carotenoids that can be converted by the body into active vitamin A (retinol). These compounds are found exclusively in plant sources such as brightly colored vegetables and leafy greens, and are very important for supporting vitamin A status, especially in people with limited animal consumption or where vitamin A deficiency is common. Unlike preformed vitamin A (retinol), which is directly active and comes from animal products, provitamin A requires enzymatic conversion before it is available for use in the body. Provitamin A is safe at high intake, well-tolerated, and suitable for applications within plant-based and functional product concepts.

Our three pillars

At Planture, we work on nutritional solutions that are good for people, animals, and the planet. Our approach rests on three core principles:
Sustainable agriculture

We support agriculture that meets today's food needs without undermining those of future generations, with an emphasis on supply chain transparency and responsible selection of partners and products.

Zero waste

Our processes are aimed at minimizing waste. We optimize resource utilization by reducing, reusing, and recycling residual flows.

Protein transition

We accelerate the shift from animal to plant-based and novel protein sources by distributing innovative ingredients, advising producers on product development, and collaborating with partners in the food chain. This way, we contribute to more sustainable nutrition with a lower ecological footprint.

The benefits of provitamin A

The main reason for applying provitamin A in food products is its contribution to maintaining healthy vitamin A levels. Vitamin A is essential for supporting vision, the immune system, skin health, and cell growth. Provitamin A carotenoids contribute to these functions by being selectively converted when the body needs them. Furthermore, carotenoids also function as antioxidants, offering additional health benefits in formulas aimed at well-being or preventive nutrition.

Provitamin A versus preformed vitamin A

Vitamin A exists in two forms: preformed vitamin A (such as retinol) from animal products, and provitamin A from plant-based sources. While retinol is directly available to the body, provitamin A must first be enzymatically converted in the intestines and liver. This conversion prevents overdose and makes provitamin A a safe, well-regulated source. Although its vitamin A activity is lower, provitamin A is highly suitable for use in plant-based or balanced nutritional formulas.

Application in food and supplements

Provitamin A is increasingly used in supplements, medical nutrition, fortified products, and other concepts. Think of multivitamin formulas, functional drinks, spreads, baby food, or meal enrichers. Thanks to its broad applicability and good consumer acceptance, provitamin A is attractive for brands striving for transparency, clean label, or specific nutritional positioning. Additionally, there are applications in animal feed, where provitamin A plays a valuable role as a safe alternative to retinol.

Why choose provitamin A from Planture?

Thanks to reliable origin, consistent quality, and good processability, provitamin A is a future-proof choice within the protein transition and micronutritional enrichment. Planture works with producers who prioritize sustainability and traceability. Moreover, we actively collaborate with developers on formulation, dosage, and application, with attention to stability and end-use.
