Exploring innovations in animal nutrition: key takeaways from SPACE 2025

Last week, our colleague Arthur attended SPACE, the international exhibition for animal nutrition and production, held in Rennes, France.

This event brought together stakeholders from across the livestock supply chain and offered a comprehensive overview of the latest innovations in feed formulation, feed technology and sustainable agricultural practices.

Growing demand for plant-based proteins in feed composition

One of the most striking trends was the rising demand for vegetable protein concentrates and isolate such a pea-, sunflower-, potato- and soya protein. A high-quality, plant-based protein source gaining popularity in both monogastric and ruminant diets. This reflects the broader industry shift towards sustainable and non-GMO protein alternatives.

In addition to proteins, Arthur observed a strong interest in diversification functional starches, particularly tapioca starch, rice starch and potato starch. These ingredients are increasingly used in feed formulations due to their digestibility, binding properties and energy contribution, especially in starter feeds.

Innovations in calf milk replacers: focus on colostrum substitutes

A notable development in young animal nutrition was the emergence of next-generation calf milk replacers. Several exhibitors showcased innovations based on neostrum and other colostrum substitutes, designed to enhance passive immune transfer and support early-life health and performance.

Arthur spent considerable time in Hall 5, the go-to location for manufacturers and distributors of calf nutrition solutions, where the focus was on bioactive compounds, immunoglobulin enrichment and gut health optimization.

Sector-specific halls: from swine to aquaculture

· Hall 8 was dedicated to pigfood, with an emphasis on cost-effective feeding strategies, mycotoxin mitigation and precision feeding technologies. Industry professionals exchanged insights on ongoing contracts and upcoming product launches.

· Hall 9 covered a broader spectrum, featuring feed solutions for ruminants, poultry, aquaculture and small ruminants. The diversity of species-specific formulations highlighted the growing need for tailored nutritional strategies.

A practical showcase: livestock judging at the exhibition

Adding a dynamic element to the exhibition was the livestock ring, where various cattle breeds were assessed not only on conformation but also on udder health, vascularization, and hoof structure. This hands-on showcase emphasized the importance of phenotypic traits in breeding and nutrition programs.

Conclusion

Arthur’s visit to SPACE 2025 reaffirmed the sector’s commitment to innovation, sustainability and animal welfare. At Planture, we continue to closely monitor these developments to ensure our portfolio meets the evolving needs of feed manufacturers and livestock producers across Europe and beyond.
