The Healthy Way of Eating Plant-Based

Healthy is the new thing!

Plant-based diet was born to increase awareness of health and the environmental benefits.

What does a Plant-based diet mean anyway?

Simply, it is a different phrase from saying vegetarian or vegan, and validating the idea of making plants in the central part of our plates while fulfilling our nutritional requirements.

The human body needs macronutrients: carbohydrates, protein, and fat as a basis, and micronutrients: vitamins and minerals in less amount for balanced energy production and to keep the body functioning. According to standard dietary guidelines, our daily diet should consist of 45-65% carbohydrates, 10-35% protein and 20-35% fat to fulfil our nutritional requirements. Naturally, we can obtain carbohydrates from fruits, vegetables, legumes, and grains. And proteins from legumes, oilseeds, whole grains and a bit from vegetables, while we can obtain fat from oilseeds and nuts. Is that all? Surely, not! This can give us a fair insight into “what a plant-based diet should comprise”. However, it is not as simple as it sounded…

Dietary requirements can vary depending on body weight, health status, gender, age, height, activity level etc. Therefore we should be aware of “ how many nutrients and calories our body requires”. Receiving micronutrients generally comes along with balanced macronutrient consumption. And macronutrients should be chosen by paying attention to the nutritional values of every marketed product and the consumption frequency of naturally threatened foods. Certainly, no one would like to enter an unhealthy diet that is plant-based yet high in sugar, saturated fats, and highly processed, while “high” quality nourishing products are available on the market.

Anyhow, sometimes we do not want to consume natural products or do not have enough nutrients in the recipes we are preparing, or we simply crave a delicious burger alternative. At this point, plant-based ‘alternatives” can give us the nutrients or the taste we are looking for. There are some quality products in the market, however, we have limited “high” quality products to fulfil our nutritional requirements. The most exciting part is from manufacturers to scientists, producers to suppliers we are all collaborating and working to meet these requirements and to develop the most nourishing mouth-watering products for the market.
